Portal 2 was to star someone called “Mel”, but when the playtesters met GLaDOS again in the sequel and she didn’t know who Mel was, they felt like the game was missing the shared experience that the first game had built up. Valve swiftly added portals back into the game series called Portal, though they resisted adding Chell back as she wasn’t much of a character and had already escaped. He said: “It was a lot of things, but it wasn’t Portal 2.” Though some elements of that version of Portal 2 still exist, with GLaDOS’ replacement Cave Johnson appearing heavily in the final game, writer Chet Faliszek pointed out at GDC 2012 that this wasn’t what people wanted in a sequel. The game was initially going to be set in the mid-’80s and based around a mechanic called “F-Stop”, which involved using a camera to grab sections of the game’s scenery to solve puzzles. Valve’s initial experiments into a Portal follow-up jettisoned everything but Aperture Science. They ship them exactly when they're going to ship them. "The interesting thing with Valve is they always make great games. "We're still talking about it," EA Partners boss David DeMartini told Eurogamer at the time. Some speculated that Valve was shopping its hotly anticipated sequel around various publishers in an attempt to get the best deal possible. And, of course, it published the original Portal as part of the superb The Orange Box.īut eyebrows were raised when Valve announced a 9th February 2011 release - a date that would later slip - for Portal 2 during German expo gamescom without naming a publisher. Since signing a publishing deal with Valve in 2005, EA's put out Half-Life 2: GOTY and Counter-Strike for the PC, and Half-Life 2 on Xbox. In August Eurogamer broke the news that EA was talking to Valve about publishing rights for Portal 2.ĮA has a long-standing relationship with the Half-Life and Counter-Strike creator. ![]() The press release announcing the deal states it relates to retail – Valve's online shop Steam will no doubt publish the digital download version.
